Bateta nu Shaak – Step by Step Recipe

A step by step recipe to make Bateta nu Shaak (Potato Curry made Gujarati style) in the Microwave!

I first heard of this dish in a Tarla Dalal cook book and came across it again in a microwave cook book by her. It is apparently a Gujarati dish, basically potatoes cooked in tomatoes and spices. Sounded interesting enough to try and with MEC – Potato Feast happening, I felt its the right time to make it.

So let me take you through the step by step recipe today.

Peel and dice around 5 medium sized potatoes and microwave them on HIGH with a little water for about 4 minutes till almost done.

Keep aside and in a seperate bowl mix 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp jeera seeds, 2 pinches of hing, 1/4 turmeric powder, 2 green chillies slit, 1 tsp of chilli powder, 1/2 inch ginger grated and one tsp of oil. Microwave it on HIGH for about 3 minutes.

Add 2 medium chopped tomatoes and microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes.

Add 1 tbsp corainder-cumin seeds powder, potatoes and microwave for about 3 minutes.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve with hot chapatis.

Bateta nu Shaak

And this goes to MEC – Potato Feast and to Tickling Plates – Lets Cook Sabzi for rotis!
