Persimmon and Apples Winter Salad is the perfect salad for those warm winter lunches. Fresh, fruity and delicious
Winter salad, a lot of people tell me that it is a misnomer. That salads are supposed to be summer things. But for me that really is not true, it will be a pity if we don’t use the beautiful produce in salads. And this Persimmon and Apples Winter Salad is just that – simple, delicious and fresh.
A bit of a diversion from the recipe since this is the first post of the year and I have to share a few things with you readers. The year that went by, the year that is coming.
2017 was a bitch, as far as years go. It started with shocking us with a big loss, a loss like nothing else I have faced in life. Dad left us on 5th January and from there on the year has been just a struggle of trying to keep afloat. Of dealing with my own grief, trying to understand how to overlap the same with the rest of the family. Dad leaving us was not the only loss this year. We lost a dear aunt, there was another close bereavement in the family, A few close friends lost a parent this year too. It has just been a cruel cruel year, a year that tested me, a year that showed me the strength I didn’t know I had, a year that brought out my weak points I didn’t know existed.
And yet, when I look back today I have much to be thankful for. Things that helped me stay afloat, people that made sure I am fine every step of the year. I can’t end the year, without listing some of them.
1. Work – I don’t if it is God’s way of telling me, everything will be fine but if there is one thing that has kept me going in 2017 has been crazy good work. I have been on an exciting project one after the other all year through. And being busy, doing something I like certainly did make it a teeny bit easier. I did menu design of about 4.5 places, blog saw lots of new associations that helped me bring good content to you all. Touchwood, it was a fabulous year as far as work goes.
3. Colouring – I really never imagined taking to coloring. But filling those flowers, teapots and more has been one of the biggest stress buster this year.
4. Friends, especially my girlfriends. The ones in Bangalore who have been there every step this year. For listening, for letting me drink when I needed to, for pulling me back when I had to stop. For laughing and for crying, for opening their homes and hearts. And the ones very far away, yet checking on my so regularly that you would think they are here. You have kept me together this year and you know who you are!
5. Social media and strangers- it is uncanny how many times unknown people have reached out for support this year. For sharing their stories, opening a part of their own grief for me. Thank you, it can’t tell you how comforting it has been to know that I am not alone. And please know that I really do appreciate your talking especially since I know how much these wounds hurt.
6. Family- they say you take the ones dearest to you for granted and probably I have done this so often this year. And yet found them by my side every time I turned around. I don’t say it often but my family is my rock. And a special mention to Fluff whose fur has probably absorbed more tears that water this year. It’s true what they say about animals love being selfless.
2017 you were the hardest year of my adult life. And I am so glad you are gone.
I have started this year by taking January off from work. For taking time for healing, skilling up and slow down. I also intend to chart up a plan for 2018 in this month, something I usually do in December but this year everything went upside down. There are some very interesting things I have in plan for 2018 and I am hoping they do see the light of the day.
Coming back to this gorgeous Winter salad, Persimmon is in season right now. I think they are pretty easy to find in most parts of the country. But in case you don’t just replace it with any other winter fruit. This salad works with pears, figs and plums. What works beautifully in this salad is it simplicity, spice from paprika, tang from lemon and richness of a good extra virgin olive oil.
So here is the recipe. If you make this salad, do share a picture with me. Tag #sinamonon Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. I would love to hear from you so do share the good things, the brickbats and if you want any clarifications about the recipe.
